Beethoven Sonata

This week we are listening to a Beethoven piano sonata.  This is Sonata No. 8, Op. 13, No. 2 in C-sharp minor.  It is also known as the “Pathetique” Sonata.  It is performed here by Daniel Barenboim.

Listen to at least the first 3 minutes. Enjoy!

Mozart’s Piano Concerto

This week we will be listening to an older but wonderful recording of a Mozart piano concerto.  Mozart wrote several piano concertos and most of them have 3 movements. All of them are written for a piano solo to be accompanied by an orchestra – that’s a lot of notes!  This is Piano Concerto No. 23, movement III performed by Zoltan Kocsis.

Please listen to at least the first 3 minutes. Listening to the entire recording is optional.

Handel’s Water Music

This week’s video is the performance of an arranged version of an Allegro movement from Handel’s “Water Music”.  (Remember that Handel is the same guy who wrote The Messiah.  The “Hallelujah Chorus” which is often heard at Christmas time, comes from Handel’s Messiah.)

Enjoy this arrangement for 4 pianos.

ASTON

This week’s listening is by a classical group named Aston.  In this video they’re playing “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele.  These are more great musicians that record pop music and you should know about them!

Remember that the time you spend listening counts as practice time on your practice logs.

This week:

  • Remember to sign your KeyNote contracts and bring them to your lesson!

A New Year

Lessons start this week! I am so excited to see everyone again!  In case you missed it, you can find the lesson schedule and semester schedule here.  Also, a new thing this year is that students are required to listen to music at home (my laptop will not be available to use during lessons anymore).  You will find the new listening video on this page every week.

I thought I’d start out with something fun!  The2PianoGuys are classical musicians who record pop hits.  Here they recruit some friends to make a great cover of a OneDirection song. Enjoy!

This week at the studio:

  • Lessons start Wednesday at the farm and Friday at the church.
  • Semester bills due at your first lesson.

The required spring recital is set for Monday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene. Students will each perform one memorized piece and either an improvisation or a duet with another student.

We will also be having the KeyNote awards ceremony directly following the recital. Awards for Festival, Guild, KeyNote points, and Perfect Practice Logs will be distributed. And don’t forget about the announcement of the Outstanding Pianist winner!
