Oboe and Bassoon

The oboe and bassoon are double reed instruments that are less common in today’s bands. Being a bassoon player myself, I love teaching double reeds. However, playing double reeds takes a responsible student who is not easily discouraged because of the cost of the reeds, the fragility of the instrument, and the dedication required to be successful.

Physical considerations: oboes are suitable for all students; bassoons are much larger and students should be able to touch the floor with their feet while sitting on a chair.

When renting or buying: If buying used, be sure to have a professional check the keys and pads for leaks. Purchase wooden (not plastic) reeds that are medium soft.

Extra equipment: Students should always have one or two extra reeds in their case as well as soft cloths for cleaning. Folding music stands are optional.
